The gravitational-wave signal GW190521 is consistent with a binary black hole (BBH) merger source at redshift 0.8 with unusually high component masses, 85 − 14 + 21 M⊙ and 66 − 18 + 17 M⊙, compared to previously reported events, and shows mild evidence for spin-induced orbital precession. The primary falls in the mass gap predicted by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova theory, in the approximate range 65–120 M⊙. The probability that at least one of the black holes in GW190521 is in that…
Find the Gap: Black Hole Population Analysis with an Astrophysically Motivated Mass Function
We introduce a novel black hole mass function that realistically models the physics of pair-instability supernovae with a minimal number of parameters. Applying this to all events in the LIGO-Virgo
GW190521: Orbital Eccentricity and Signatures of Dynamical Formation in a Binary Black Hole Merger Signal
Pair-instability supernovae are thought to restrict the formation of black holes in the mass range ∼ 50 – 135 M ⊙ . However, black holes with masses within this “high mass gap” are expected to form
Is GW190521 the merger of black holes from the first stellar generations?
GW190521 challenges our understanding of the late-stage evolution of massive stars and the effects of the pair instability in particular. We discuss the possibility that stars at low or zero
Eccentricity estimate for black hole mergers with numerical relativity simulations
The origin of black hole mergers discovered by the LIGO 1 and Virgo 2 gravitational-wave observatories is currently unknown. GW190521 3 , 4 is the heaviest black hole merger detected so far. Its
Breaching the Limit: Formation of GW190521-like and IMBH Mergers in Young Massive Clusters
The LIGO-Virgo-Kagra Collaboration (LVC) discovered recently GW190521, a gravitational wave (GW) source associated with the merger between two black holes (BHs) with mass 66 and >85 M ⊙. GW190521
Formation of GW190521 via Gas Accretion onto Population III Stellar Black Hole Remnants Born in High-redshift Minihalos
The recent gravitational-wave merger event, GW190521, has challenged our understanding of stellar-mass black hole (BH) formation. The primary and secondary BHs are both inferred to fall inside the
Minding the Gap: GW190521 as a Straddling Binary
Models for black hole (BH) formation from stellar evolution robustly predict the existence of a pair-instability supernova (PISN) mass gap in the range ∼50 to ∼120 solar masses. This theoretical
Evidence of Large Recoil Velocity from a Black Hole Merger Signal.
The final black hole left behind after a binary black hole merger can attain a recoil velocity, or a "kick," reaching values up to 5000  km/s. This phenomenon has important implications for
Constraints from Gravitational-wave Detections of Binary Black Hole Mergers on the12C(α, γ)16O Rate
Gravitational-wave detections are starting to allow us to probe the physical processes in the evolution of very massive stars through the imprints they leave on their final remnants. Stellar
Binary Black Hole Mergers from Young Massive and Open Clusters: Comparison to GWTC-2 Gravitational Wave Data
Several astrophysical scenarios have been proposed to explain the origin of the population of binary black hole (BBH) mergers detected in gravitational waves by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration. Among

The Impact of Pair-instability Mass Loss on the Binary Black Hole Mass Distribution
A population of binary black hole mergers has now been observed in gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO and Virgo. The masses of these black holes appear to show evidence for a pileup between 30 and
MERGING BLACK HOLE BINARIES IN GALACTIC NUCLEI: IMPLICATIONS FOR ADVANCED-LIGO DETECTIONS
Motivated by the recent detection of gravitational waves from the black hole binary merger GW150914, we study the dynamical evolution of (stellar-mass) black holes in galactic nuclei, where massive

TLDR
It is found that the final remnant's mass and spin, as determined from the low-frequency and high-frequency phases of the signal, are mutually consistent with the binary black-hole solution in general relativity.
GW190814: Gravitational Waves from the Coalescence of a 23 Solar Mass Black Hole with a 2.6 Solar Mass Compact Object
We report the observation of a compact binary coalescence involving a 22.2–24.3 M⊙ black hole and a compact object with a mass of 2.50–2.67 M⊙ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The
Fingerprints of Binary Black Hole Formation Channels Encoded in the Mass and Spin of Merger Remnants
Binary black holes (BBHs) are thought to form in different environments, including the galactic field and (globular, nuclear, young, and open) star clusters. Here, we propose a method to estimate the

TLDR
Details of the method and computations are given, including information about the search pipelines, a derivation of the likelihood function for the analysis, a description of the astrophysical search trigger distribution expected from merging BBHs, details on the computational methods, and an analytic method of estimating the detector sensitivity that is calibrated to the measurements.
ILLUMINATING BLACK HOLE BINARY FORMATION CHANNELS WITH SPINS IN ADVANCED LIGO
The recent detections of the binary black hole mergers GW150914 and GW151226 have inaugurated the field of gravitational-wave astronomy. For the two main formation channels that have been proposed
Intermediate - mass black holes
The mathematical simplicity of black holes, combined with their links to some of the most energetic events in the universe, means that black holes are key objects for fundamental physics and
The most powerful astrophysical events: Gravitational-wave peak luminosity of binary black holes as predicted by numerical relativity
For a brief moment, a binary black hole (BBH) merger can be the most powerful astrophysical event in the visible Universe. Here we present a model fit for this gravitational-wave peak luminosity of
