Astroviruses are associated with gastroenteritis in humans and many diseases in animals. Human astroviruses (HAstVs) cannot be propagated readily or isolated in conventional cell cultures. The presence of trypsin supports HAstV growth in selected cell cultures such as the continuous colonic carcinoma cell line (CaCo-2).
