Most metallic glasses (MGs) exhibit weak evidence of slow β-relaxation in their dynamic mechanical spectroscopy spectra. In contrast to other MGs, the La-based MGs we report here show a distinct slow β-relaxation peak in the mechanical relaxation measurements. We find that the slow β-relaxation behavior can be tuned by modification of the chemical composition and fragility. The structural origin of the slow β-relaxation and correlation between β-relaxation and α-relaxation in the MGs are also…

Prominent β-relaxations in yttrium based metallic glasses
Most metallic glasses (MGs) exhibit weak slow β-relaxation. We report the prominent β-relaxation in YNiAl metallic glass with a wide composition range. Compared with other MGs, the MGs show a
Strong beta relaxation in high entropy bulk metallic glasses
β relaxation of metallic glasses (MGs) has already been researched deeply in recent years. In contrast to MGs, which are usually composed of a principal element and another less solute element, we
Dynamic mechanical analysis in La-based bulk metallic glasses: Secondary (β) and main (α) relaxations
Relaxation behavior was investigated in typical La-based bulk metallic glasses by dynamic mechanical analysis, both in the isochronal and in the isothermal routes. Two relaxations were observed: the
Relaxation of bulk metallic glasses studied by mechanical spectroscopy.
TLDR
It is found that the activation energy Uβ and the peak temperature Tβp of the β relaxation follow the approximate relationship: Uβ ≈ 31.5RTβp (for driving frequency 1 Hz), indicating that the high temperature limit of the peak frequency is approximately the same for all the MGs investigated.
The β-relaxation in metallic glasses
Focusing on metallic glasses as model systems, we review the features and mechanisms of the β-relaxations, which are intrinsic and universal to supercooled liquids and glasses, and demonstrate their
Compositional origin of unusual β-relaxation properties in La-Ni-Al metallic glasses.
TLDR
It is found that the isochronal loss peak temperature of β-relaxation, Tβ,peak, is effectively determined by the total (La + Ni) content, and it is deduced that La and Ni have high mobility in the MGs, and this explains why the β- Relaxation in this La-based MGs is prominent and well resolved from the α-relAXation.

Observation of secondary relaxation in a fragile Pd40Ni10Cu30P20 bulk metallic glass
The dynamic elastic moduli in the temperature domain of a Pd40Ni10Cu30P20 bulk metallic glass were measured with dynamic mechanical spectroscopy at frequencies less than 100Hz. The primary relaxation
Measurements of slow β -relaxations in metallic glasses and supercooled liquids
Dynamic mechanical measurements were performed on a series of strong and fragile metallic glass-forming liquids in isochronous and isothermal routes. Our results indicate that slow
Mechanical relaxation in supercooled liquids of bulk metallic glasses
We report the mechanical relaxation behaviors in typical supercooled liquids of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). The metallic supercooled liquids are ideal systems for studying intrinsic motions of
Relating activation of shear transformation zones to β relaxations in metallic glasses
The mechanisms of plastic deformation of glassy solids and structural origin of beta relaxation are two fundamental issues. We provide compelling experimental evidence that the activation of shear

It is found that unlike fragile glasses the strong HQGeO(2) glass relaxes in a manner that all the secondary relaxation units contribute to the primary relaxation.

It is found that in sorbitol the dynamics of the whole molecule contributes equally to the beta process, while in glycerol the hydrogen bond forming OH groups remain rather rigid compared to the hydrogens bonded to the carbon skeleton.

TLDR
The connection between this boson peak and the fast dynamic process appearing near Tg is discussed, and the time-temperature superposition principle, which is valid for polymers on a macroscopic scale, is not applicable for temperatures approaching Tg.
