The amygdaloid complex has a key role in the modulation of behavioral responses in life-threatening situations, including the direction of attentional responses to sensory stimuli. The pathways from the amygdala to the basal forebrain cholinergic system, which projects to the cortex, are proposed to contribute to the modulation.
