BACKGROUND Cathepsin D is an estrogen-regulated lysosomal protease that may be overexpressed in breast cancer. Several studies based on biochemical analysis of tumor cytosol have shown that high levels of cathepsin D are associated with poor outcome in patients with breast cancer.
