Background and Purpose— The aim of this systematic review was to quantify the risk of ipsilateral stroke in patients with asymptomatic carotid artery occlusion (ACAO). Methods— Studies reporting ipsilateral stroke risk in ACAO were identified by a search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and study bibliographies. Study estimates were pooled using a random effects model, and heterogeneity was quantified using the I2 statistic. The primary outcome was the annual rate of ipsilateral stroke. Results— Thirteen…

Ultrasonography for the diagnosis of extra-cranial carotid occlusion - diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis.
TLDR
US is a reliable and accurate method in diagnosing ICA occlusion and can be used as a screening tool with cross-sectional imaging being reserved for ambiguous cases.

TLDR
Signal characteristics between those with symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery occlusions differ in a statistically significant fashion, indicating a different structure of the occlusion.
Endovascular Recanalization of Tandem Internal Carotid Occlusions Using the Balloon-assisted Tracking Technique.
TLDR
Application of BAT technique in tandem occlusions appears feasible, safe, and efficient, and further evaluation of this technique is awaited.
Prevention of Carotid Artery Atherosclerosis: What is the Evidence?
TLDR
There are enough evidence-based medicine results to demand intensive medical preventive measures and not just relegate the patient with asymptomatic or symptomatic CAA to decision-making only involving the surgeon and interventionalist.
Urinary Proteomics Identifying Novel Biomarkers for the Diagnosis and Phenotyping of Carotid Artery Stenosis
TLDR
This study identified novel potential urinary biomarkers for noninvasive early screening and risk stratification of CAS and showed that these proteins are mainly related to immune/inflammatory pathways.
dizziness and carotid artery stenosis what is the relationship
TLDR
A systematic approach will benefit the patient by streamlining referral to the appropriate specialist for dizziness syndromes and generally should be considered asymptomatic if dizziness is the only complaint.
Spontan Recanalization of Internal Carotis Artery Occlusion: A Case Report
TLDR
This case report presented a case who could have the opportunity of carotid artery stending treatment, where it is incidentally revealed that the occlusion of ICA is recanalized.

Prognosis of asymptomatic carotid occlusion
Clinical outcome of patients with internal carotid artery occlusion: a prospective follow-up study.
TLDR
ICA occlusion seems to represent a relatively benign condition, in both its symptomatic and asymptomatic presentation, and the presence of an atherosclerotic stenosis less than 75% of the contralateral ICA does not seem to worsen the prognosis of this condition.
Benign prognosis of never-symptomatic carotid occlusion
TLDR
Never-symptomatic carotid occlusion carries a very low risk of subsequent ischemic stroke, and this benign prognosis is associated with a low incidence of cerebral hemodynamic compromise in these patients.
Outcome of carotid artery occlusion is predicted by cerebrovascular reactivity.
TLDR
Impaired cerebrovascular reactivity is predictive for cerebral ischemic events in patients with carotid occlusion, and older age was significantly associated with the risk of developing symptoms.
Benign outcome of carotid occlusion
TLDR
The data on stroke risk in asymptomatic patients with unilateral carotid artery occlusion indicate a benign outcome.
Cerebrovascular reactivity predicts stroke in high-grade carotid artery disease
TLDR
This analysis supports the usefulness of CO2R in risk prediction for patients with severe carotid artery stenosis or occlusion, both in recently symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
Long term prognosis of asymptomatic carotid artery occlusion.
TLDR
The data on stroke risk in patients with asymptomatic carotid artery occlusion show a good prognosis in the long-term, and three patients reported transitory ischemic attacks (TIAs) during follow-up.
Risk of Stroke at the Time of Carotid Occlusion.
TLDR
The risk of progression tocarotid occlusion is well below the risk of carotid stenting or endarterectomy and has decreased markedly with more intensive medical therapy.
