We studied the effects of progesterone on the contractile motility of the guinea pig gallbladderin vitro. Carbachol (10−6 M) induced contractions were reduced by the pretreatment with progesterone (10−8–10−6 M) in a dose-dependent manner. Concentration-response curves for carbachol, histamine and CCK-OP showed inhibition by progesterone (5×10−7 M). These results suggest that progesterone has a direct inhibitory effect on gallbladder smooth muscle. Contractile responses to potassium (10–60 mM…

Progesterone inhibits L‐type calcium currents in gallbladder smooth muscle cells
TLDR
This study sought to investigate the effects of progesterone on L‐type calcium currents and voltage‐dependent potassium currents in gallbladder smooth muscle cells.
Estrogen and progesterone receptors in gallbladder cancer
TLDR
It is suggested that gallbladder cancers with ER in the nuclei may respond to antihormone therapy.

Effect of apamin and theophylline on adenosine-5'-triphosphate-induced response of the guinea pig gallbladder.
TLDR
The results indicate that two kinds of receptors for ATP exist in the guinea pig gallbladder and the theophylline-sensitive receptors may be involved in the contractile response and the apamin- sensitive receptors in relaxation.
Smooth muscle mechanical responses in vitro to bethanechol after progesterone in male rat.
TLDR
The results suggest possible progesteronic influences on contractile force in gastrointestinal smooth muscle in male Sprague-Dawley rats pretreated subcutaneously with either progesterone (3 mg/kg per day) in a vehicle or a vehicle only for 3 days.
Inhibition of lower esophageal sphincter circular muscle by female sex hormones.
TLDR
It is suggested that the female sex hormones can alter LES function and potentially may be of importance in the pathogenesis of heartburn of pregnancy.
EFFECT OF PREGNANCY ON THE EMPTYING OF THE GALLBLADDER: A PRELIMINARY REPORT
TLDR
A complete review of the recent data with regard to the emptying of the gallbladder has been presented by Whitaker.
Effects of pregnancy and contraceptive steroids on gallbladder function.
TLDR
Incomplete empyting of the gallbladder in late pregnancy leaves a large residual volume and may cause retention of cholesterol crystals, a prerequisite for cholesterol-gallstone formation, consistent with the view that pregnancy increases the risk of cholesterol gallstones.
