The deoxynucleoside analogues cytarabine (Ara-C) and gemcitabine (dFdC) are drugs commonly used in the treatment of cancer. Due to their hydrophilic nature, the drugs are dependent on equilibrative and concentrative nucleoside transporters to enter the cell. To enhance cellular drug uptake, lipophilic analogues (5’-elaidic acid esters) were synthesized: CP-4055 (Ara-C) and CP-4126 (dFdC).
