Microbial lipids produced by Rhodotorula gracilis NRRL Y-1091 grown in continuous culture under nitrogen-limiting condition were evaluated and the effects of growth rate and oxygen concentration on the degree of unsaturatoin of fatty acids studied. As the growth rate increased the protein content of the biomass increased but cell biomass, lipid content, and lipid productivity decreased; the specific lipid production rate remained constant at about 0.012 g lipid/g dry biomass/h.
