The objective of the Phase I program was to establish the feasibility of producing TiB2 whiskers. Two approaches were investigated. High temperature carbothermic reduction of titanium and boron compounds produced TiB2 platelets, and using excess B to limit the growth on the basal plane, platelets with thickness of 1.5 microns and 10 microns length and width were produced.
