PURPOSE OF REVIEW Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is the surgical treatment of choice for patients with ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis who require colectomy. Although the surgical procedure significantly improves the patients' quality of life, complications are common.
