Theories of dark energy require a screening mechanism to explain why the associated scalar fields do not mediate observable long range fifth forces. The archetype of this is the chameleon field. Here we show that individual atoms are too small to screen the chameleon field inside a large high-vacuum chamber, and therefore can detect the field with high sensitivity. We derive new limits on the chameleon parameters from existing experiments, and show that most of the remaining chameleon parameter…

Atomic Interferometry Test of Dark Energy
Atomic interferometry can be used to probe dark energy models coupled to matter. We consider the constraints coming from recent experimental results on models generalising the inverse power law
Experiment to Detect Dark Energy Forces Using Atom Interferometry.
TLDR
Atom interferometry is used to measure the acceleration of an atom toward a macroscopic test mass inside a high vacuum chamber, where new forces can be unscreened and show no evidence of new forces.
A proposed experimental search for chameleons using asymmetric parallel plates

Decoherence from Long-Range Forces in Atom Interferometry
Atom interferometers provide a powerful means of realizing quantum coherent systems with increasingly macroscopic extent in space and time. These systems provide an opportunity for a variety of novel
Atom-interferometry constraints on dark energy
TLDR
The results of experiments that controlled for dark energy screening mechanisms in individual atoms, not bulk matter constrained a wide class of dark energy theories, including a range of chameleon fields and other theories that reproduce the observed cosmic acceleration.
Quantum simulation of dark energy candidates
Additional scalar fields from scalar-tensor, modified gravity or higher dimensional theories beyond general relativity may account for dark energy and the accelerating expansion of the Universe.
Casimir, gravitational, and neutron tests of dark energy
We investigate laboratory tests of dark energy theories which modify gravity in a way generalising the inverse power law chameleon models. We make use of the tomographic description of such theories

Search for chameleon scalar fields with the axion dark matter experiment.
TLDR
The ADMX experiment was used in the first chameleon search with a microwave cavity to set a new limit on scalar chameLeonard-photon coupling βγ excluding values between 2×10(9) and 5× 10(14) for effective chAMEleon masses between 1.9510 and 1.

The Dark Energy Survey
Dark Energy is the dominant constituent of the universe and we have little understanding of it. We describe a new project aimed at measuring the dark energy equation of state parameter, w, to a

It is shown that the presence of a chameleon field over a planar plate would alter the energy levels of ultracold neutrons in the terrestrial gravitational field.
Screening long-range forces through local symmetry restoration.
TLDR
A screening mechanism that allows a scalar field to mediate a long-range force of gravitational strength in the cosmos while satisfying local tests of gravity and predicting deviations from general relativity in the solar system that are within reach of next-generation experiments, as well as astrophysically observable violations of the equivalence principle.
