We investigate general probabilistic theories in which every mixed state has a purification, unique up to reversible channels on the purifying system. We show that the purification principle is equivalent to the existence of a reversible realization of every physical process, that is, to the fact that every physical process can be regarded as arising from a reversible interaction of the system with an environment, which is eventually discarded. From the purification principle we also construct…

Classicality without local discriminability: Decoupling entanglement and complementarity

It is demonstrated that the presence of entanglement is independent of the existence of incompatible measurements, and on the basis of the fact that every separable state of the theory is a statistical mixture of entangled states, a no-go conjecture is formulated for theexistence of a local-realistic ontological model.

Operational axioms for state diagonalization

This work presents a set of axioms that guarantee that every state can be diagonalized, and introduces an axiom named Pure Sharp Effect, stating that for every system there exists at least one pure effect that occurs with unit probability on some state.

Intermediate determinism in general probabilistic theories

Quantum theory is indeterministic, but not completely so. When a system is in a pure state there are properties it possesses with certainty, known as actual properties. The actual properties of a

Entanglement and thermodynamics in general probabilistic theories

This work addresses the question whether an entangled state can be transformed into another by means of local operations and classical communication and proves a general version of the Lo-Popescu theorem, which lies at the foundations of the theory of pure-state entanglement.

Classical theories with entanglement

We investigate operational probabilistic theories where the pure states of every system are the vertices of a simplex. A special case of such theories is that of classical theories, i.e. simplicial

A simple formulation of no-cloning and no-hiding that admits efficient and robust verification

Incompatibility is a feature of quantum theory that sets it apart from classical theory, and the inability to clone an unknown quantum state is one of the most fundamental instances. The no-hiding

Operational thermodynamics from purity

This is an extended abstract based on the preprint [15]. We propose four information-theoretic axioms for the foundations of statistical mechanics in general physical theories. The axioms—Causality,

Information-Theoretic Postulates for Quantum Theory

Why are the laws of physics formulated in terms of complex Hilbert spaces? Are there natural and consistent modifications of quantum theory that could be tested experimentally? This book chapter

An operational resource theory of purity

A successful approach to the foundations of thermodynamics is to consider purity as a resource. Operationally, this can be done in different ways, depending on which set of operations is regarded as

Pseudo standard entanglement structure cannot be distinguished from standard entanglement structure

An experimental verification of the maximally entangled state ensures that the constructed state is close to the maximally entangled state, but it does not guarantee that the state is exactly the

Information processing in generalized probabilistic theories

A framework in which a variety of probabilistic theories can be defined, including classical and quantum theories, and many others, is introduced, and a tensor product rule for combining separate systems can be derived.

Evidence for the epistemic view of quantum states: A toy theory

We present a toy theory that is based on a simple principle: the number of questions about the physical state of a system that are answered must always be equal to the number that are unanswered in a

Physical Purification of Quantum States

We introduce the concept of a physical process that purifies a mixed quantum state, taken from a set of states, and investigate the conditions under which such a purification map exists. Here, a

Theoretical framework for quantum networks

We present a framework to treat quantum networks and all possible transformations thereof, including as special cases all possible manipulations of quantum states, measurements, and channels, such

Reexamination of quantum bit commitment: The possible and the impossible

It is shown that any concealing protocol allows the sender to find a cheating strategy, which is universal in the sense that it works against any strategy of the receiver, and provides a natural characterization of protocols that fall outside the standard setting of unlimitedmore » available technology and thus may allow secure bit commitment.

Properties of quantum nonsignaling boxes

A classical nonsignaling (or causal) box is an operation on classical bipartite input with classical bipartite output such that no signal can be sent from a party to the other through the use of the

Information causality as a physical principle

It is suggested that information causality—a generalization of the no-signalling condition—might be one of the foundational properties of nature and help to distinguish physical theories from non-physical ones.

On the missing axiom of Quantum Mechanicss

The debate on the nature of quantum probabilities in relation to Quantum Non Locality has elevated Quantum Mechanics to the level of an Operational Epistemic Theory. In such context the quantum

Quantum circuits with mixed states

A solution for the subroutine problem: the general function that a quantum circuit outputs is a probabilistic function, but using pure state language, such a function can not be used as a black box in other computations.

Properties of Conjugate Channels with Applications to Additivity and Multiplicativity

Quantum channels can be described via a unitary coupling of system and environment, followed by a trace over the environment state space. Taking the trace instead over the system state space produces
