Microcephaly is a condition in which the head circumference is smaller than <3 SD below the mean for age. Syndromic microcephaly is found in a number of environmental, chromosomal, or single-gene disorders. Nonsyndromic, isolated microcephaly is also etiologically heterogeneous, and micrencephaly—that is, a generalized reduction of the brain mass causing a small skull without craniosynostosis—appears as a distinct subtype within this group.
