Prolonged hyperglycemia results in a number of diabetic complications, including retinopathy. Pericyte degeneration is one of the earliest histological changes observed in the development of diabetic retinopathy. Increased free radicals generated under hyperglycemia could damage the retina, which abounds in polyunsaturated fatty acids.
