BACKGROUND Lung ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a significant problem after lung transplantation. Caspase-mediated apoptotic pathways play an important role in lung ischemia-reperfusion injury, and caspase-3 is presumed to be the "effector" protease in the apoptotic cascade.
