Although hydatid disease or echinococcosis is prevalent in Mediterranean countries published data for Libya are scanty. Domestic ungulates are the usual intermediate hosts in the domestic life-cycle of E. granulosus. Man is infected by swallowing the eggs which have been passed in the faeces of the definitive hosts (dogs, wolves, jackals, hyenas, foxes).
