}Human papillomavirus is a DNA virus that includes 118 genotypes. HPV16 is responsible for 80% of cervical cancer in women. Men are important reservoirs and major transmitters of HPV to their partners. The aim of this study was to detect HPV DNA and to determine the prevalence of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 in urine samples of men infected with HIV‐1. This study included 223 patients infected with HIV‐1 from the Center of Reference on HIV/AIDS (CRT‐SP) and an outpatient clinic of HIV. Urine…

The high prevalence of HPV 16 among renal allograft recipients suggests that an HPV‐16‐based preventive or therapeutic vaccine may be effective for prevention or treatment of HPV‐related neoplasia in this group of immune compromised patients.

Preliminary support is provided for the proposal to use urine testing as a primary or secondary screening tool for cervical cancer in HIV-positive women or as an epidemiological tool by comparing detection and genotyping of human papillomavirus DNA in urine samples and matching cervical swab specimens of HIV- positive women.

The results suggest that urine may be a practical sample for testing of HPV urogenital infection, and further research is required before the detection of HPV in urine can be applied in the routine cervical screening programs.

- BiologyJournal of medical virology

A high prevalence of HPV was found in a rural community, where regular Papanicolaou (Pap) smears would be a logistic and economic impossibility, but where free vaccination programmes against other infections are already established, and the results suggest that HIV co‐infection may have an impact on HPV genotype distribution.

The results of this study indicate that the detection of HPVs in the urogenital tract can be maximised through the testing of both cervical scrapes and urine specimens in conjunction with the use of a nested PCR to increase the sensitivity of HPV DNA detection.
