Host biodiversity can impact disease risk and influence the transmission of parasitic disease. Stream sediment-dwelling worms, Tubifex tubifex (Clitellata: Oligochaeta), are the definitive host of the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxozoa: Myxosporea), which causes whirling disease in salmonid fishes.
