Prevalence of Larval Anisakis simplex in Pen-reared and Wild-caught Salmon (Salmonidae) from Puget Sound, Washington
@inproceedings{Deardorff1989PrevalenceOL, title={Prevalence of Larval Anisakis simplex in Pen-reared and Wild-caught Salmon (Salmonidae) from Puget Sound, Washington}, author={Thomas L. Deardorff and Michael L Kent}, booktitle={Journal of wildlife diseases}, year={1989} }
The abundance of parasites of public health significance in pen-reared salmon and wild-caught salmon was compared. Two hundred eighty-seven salmon from Puget Sound, Washington, were examined for third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex. Of these fish, 237 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) were reared in commercial salmon pens and 50 sockeye salmon (O. nerka) were caught during their spawning migration. All wild-caught salmon were…

It is concluded that the possibility of anisakid infection is very low in farmed salmonids and the stomach and intestines of farmed fish were examined carefully for the existence of possible carrier organisms such as crustaceans, fish or squid.

Consumption of unfrozen, raw or semi-raw musculature represents a risk for humans developing anisakiasis and the intensity of A. simplex larvae was positively correlated with increasing weight and sea age of the host.

The intestinal wall had a hypercellular appearance with extensive cellular infiltration comprising eosinophilic granular cells, macrophages, lymphocytes, and fibrocytes, and the earliest in the marine migration of Atlantic salmon that A. simplex sensu stricto infection has been recorded.

Immature heterocheilid nematodes, usually Contracaecum or Anisakis, are commonly found encysted in commercial fish brought to the Seattle docks and it seems likely that the common final host is a piscivorous fish.
