We conducted a cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence of gallstone disease (gallstone or cholecystectomy) in a random sample of the adult population of Guadalajara, Spain. The sample stratified by age and sex was drawn from the municipal census. Stratum sample sizes were proportional to population sizes and to the expected prevalence rates calculated through a meta-analysis of the European literature.
