We analysed pretarsal characters of 87 species of Leiodidae (including 10 cholevines and representatives of all tribes and ca. 60% of the genera of non‐cholevines), five species of Agyrtidae, and nine representatives of outgroup taxa (Hydraenidae, Staphylinidae, Hydrophilidae, and Histeridae) using scanning electron microscopy. We focused our observations on the architecture of the empodium (including the sclerites and associated setae), the shape and composition of the medial projection of the…

It is recognized (as a new synapomorphy for the tribe) that special, strong spines also appear at the apex of the first three or four tarsomeres of the Ptomaphagini, a tribe with a Holarctic-Neotropical-Oriental distribution.
The Near Eastern species of Leptodirini (Coleoptera: Leiodidae: Cholevinae)
- BiologyAnnales de la Société entomologique de France (N.S.)

The Near Eastern species of Leptodirini (from Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Southwestern Russia, Syria and Turkey) are reviewed and the genus Catopsinus (Motschulsky, 1868) is resurrected for four species previously placed in Bathysciola Jeannel, 1910, solving the long-term problem of the name “Bathysciol”.

- BiologyCladistics : the international journal of the Willi Hennig Society

A phylogenetic analysis of the subtribe Philonthina with focus on its NT lineage based on 132 morphological characters including 79 taxa from genera and/or species groups relevant to the study found that the NT lineage diversified into at least seven clades, each of which provides a framework for future taxonomic studies.

A phylogenetic signal is found in an apical crown of tibial spines not interrupted at the outer spur, which seems to be an additional synapomorphy of Ptomaphagini, differing from the pattern in Eucatopini and remaining cholevines with anapical comb of spines, in which the comb is interrupted.

The pretarsus in Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera Parasitica): functional morphology and possible phylogenetic implications
- Biology

The structure of the pretarsus of chalcid wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) was examined with light and scanning electron microscopy and characters may be correlated with differences in body size that characterize the different lineages rather than being phylogenetically important.
Morphology and evolution of the tarsal plantulae in Hymenoptera (Insecta), focussing on the basal lineages

The morphology of the plantulae (= tarsal pulvilli = plantar lobes), structures attached to the underside of the tarsus in Hymenoptera, was examined in 55 genera from all 14 families of the basal lineages and a few species of Apocrita using scanning electron microscopy.

The presence of hairy euplantulae as part of the stonefly ground pattern contradicts the recent view that stoneflies lack pad-like euplulae and that the ancestral condition for tarsomeres 1 and 2 may be a narrow median longitudinal unsclerotised band such as that found in representatives of the Austroperlidae.
