OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to describe the presentation, treatment and prognosis of local recurrences following total mesorectal excision for rectal adenocarcinoma. METHOD Between 1999 and 2002, 201 patients were treated with total mesorectal excision for mid or low rectal cancer and were followed up prospectively. RESULTS Overall 2-year survival was 85%.
