THE IDEA of removing the cataract in its capsule has interested ophthalmic surgeons for many years, but it was not until Henry Smith, in 1903, accepted the opportunity, offered by the many sufferers from cataract in India, to develop an intracapsular technic that a new era began in cataract surgery.
