}Cyanide leaching was used to obtain Au/SiO2 catalysts with very low gold loadings. A number of catalysts with a nominal 5 wt% target loading were prepared using impregnation and deposition precipitation techniques and these were found to be active catalysts for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Exposure of these catalysts to a basic solution of NaCN for 10 min leached gold from the materials to give very pale pink catalysts which were found to contain just 0.06 wt% Au. The…

Non-metallic behaviour is an unavoidable property of very small gold particles, and therefore cannot be ignored when seeking to explain their exceptional activity, and must be sought in kinetic analysis.

The shape of Au8: gold leaf or gold nugget?
- ChemistryNanoscale

It is found that increasing basis set size within the B2PLYP framework has a greater destabilizing effect on the nuggets than it has on the Au8 cloverleaf, and PBE may be a better candidate density functional for the simulation of gold nanoclusters in this context.

The Au-Pd nanocrystalline catalysts supported on carbon prepared via a sol-immobilisation technique show higher activity when compared with catalysts prepared by impregnation as they are more active for both hydrogen peroxide synthesis and hydrogenation, and also for benzyl alcohol oxidation.

It is shown that Au/Pd-TiO2 catalysts give very high turnover frequencies (up to 270,000 turnovers per hour) for the oxidation of alcohols, including primary alkyl alcohols and the addition of Au to Pd nanocrystals improved the overall selectivity.
Identification of Active Gold Nanoclusters on Iron Oxide Supports for CO Oxidation

High catalytic activity for carbon monoxide oxidation is correlated with the presence of bilayer clusters that are ∼0.5 nanometer in diameter and contain only ∼10 gold atoms, consistent with that demonstrated previously with the use of model catalyst systems.
