A new strategy to render intrinsically hydrophobic microrough titanium implant surfaces superhydrophilic is reported, which is based on a rapid treatment with diluted aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions. The physicochemical characterization and protein interaction of the resulting superhydrophilic implant surfaces are presented.
