Upper airway dilator activity during sleep appears to be diminished under conditions of enhanced sleep propensity, such as after sleep deprivation, leading to worsening of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep propensity originates in sleep-active neurons of the preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus and is facilitated by activation of POA warm-sensitive neurons (WSNs). We hypothesized that activation of WSNs by local POA warming would inhibit activity of the…

Sleep, headaches and cerebral energy control: a synoptic view
TLDR
How sleep and headaches are reciprocally involved in preservation and restoration of brain energy is described to facilitate the cerebral energy preservation by reducing its consumption and by ensuring its recovery.
Cluster headache and obstructive sleep apnea: Are they related disorders?
TLDR
There is evidence that CH and obstructiveSleep apnea are not causal, but rather parallel processes both generated in the hypothalamus, and the proposed pathophysiological mechanisms of these two entities and the possible relationship between CH and sleep apnea is discussed.

Cluster headache and sleep, is there a connection? A review
TLDR
There is evidence in favour of an association between episodic cluster headache and REM sleep whereas no such relation to chronic cluster headache has been reported.

Dynamic respiratory responses to preoptic/anterior hypothalamic warming in the sleeping cat.
TLDR
The results suggest that descending thermal influences on respiratory patterning differ between QS and REM states in both overall respiratory rate and on relative TI and TE, and thus do not affect inspiratory drive exclusively.
Upper airway function during sleep and wakefulness: experimental studies on normal and anesthetized cats.
Normal (N = 6) and anesthetized (N = 70) cats were used to study the laryngeal abductors, the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscles, during sleep and wakefulness and to investigate sites within the
Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle activity during wakefulness and sleep in normal adults.
TLDR
The results suggest that vocal cord position during quiet breathing in wakefulness is actively controlled by simultaneously acting antagonistic intrinsic laryngeal muscles, and the return of the vocal cords toward the midline during expiration in stage 3-4 NREM sleep appears to be a passive phenomenon.
Effects of acute sleep deprivation on control of the diaphragm during REM sleep in cats.
TLDR
The results imply that respiratory control mechanisms in REM sleep are sensitive to the effects of prior sleep deprivation, and should be considered a source of concern for policymakers.
The effect of sleep deprivation on activity of the genioglossus muscle.
TLDR
It is concluded that sleep deprivation selectively decreases genioglossal EMG activity during CO2 rebreathing in awake older subjects, and this influence of sleep deprivation may play a role in the pathogenesis or severity of obstructive sleep apnea.
Influence of Sleep States on Laryngeal and Abdominal Muscle Response to Upper Airway Occlusion in Lambs
TLDR
It is concluded that UAO triggers complex and coordinated laryngeal and abdominal muscle responses during wakefulness and nREM sleep in lambs; these responses are largely absent, however, in REM sleep.
Brain structures and mechanisms involved in the generation of NREM sleep: focus on the preoptic hypothalamus.
TLDR
These studies establish mechanisms by which POA hypnogenic neurons can inhibit EEG and behavioral arousal, and there is evidence that arousal-related neurotransmitters inhibit VLPO sleep-active neurons.
Neuronal discharge of preoptic/anterior hypothalamic thermosensitive neurons: relation to NREM sleep.
TLDR
Results are consistent with a hypothesis that the activation of sleep-related warm-sensitive neurons and the deactivation of wake-related cold-sensitive neuron may play a key role in the onset and regulation of NREM sleep.
