From 1860 to 1936 China switched from a virtually closed economy to an open economy deeply integrated to the world market. Large-scale industrialization also took place since 1890s. Using the first-hand China Maritime Customs dataset, this paper first collects the nominal wages of Custom employees of different positions all over the country in this period.
