Preliminary Data on the Behavior, Ecology, and Morphology of Pygmy Tarsiers (Tarsius pumilus)
@article{Grow2010PreliminaryDO, title={Preliminary Data on the Behavior, Ecology, and Morphology of Pygmy Tarsiers (Tarsius pumilus)}, author={Nanda Grow and Sharon Gursky-Doyen}, journal={International Journal of Primatology}, year={2010}, volume={31}, pages={1174-1191} }
We here present the first behavioral, morphological, and ecological data on a living group of highland pygmy tarsiers, Tarsius pumilus, and compare them with the lowland tarsier species of Sulawesi. Pygmy tarsiers were previously known only from 3 museum specimens and had not been seen alive since the first specimens were collected in 1917 and 1930. As part of a 2-mo exploratory study, we recently located a group consisting of ≥4 pygmy tarsiers in the mossy cloud forest of Lore Lindu National…

The results indicate that T. pumilus is not an aberrant form of a lowland tarsier, but in fact, the most basal of all Sulawesi tarsiers.

Pygmy tarsiers (Tarsius pumilus) of central Sulawesi, Indonesia are the only species of tarsier known to live exclusively at high altitudes. This paper examines how the ranging patterns and…
Altitude and Forest Edges Influence the Density and Distribution of Pygmy Tarsiers (Tarsius pumilus)
- Environmental ScienceAmerican journal of primatology
- 2013
Results indicate that pygmy tarsiers live at a lower density than lowland Sulawesian tarsier species, and may mitigate the decreased availability of insects at high altitudes by adjusting their ranging patterns to remain near forest edges.
Cryptic Communication in a Montane Nocturnal Haplorhine, Tarsius pumilus
- BiologyFolia Primatologica
- 2019
The results indicate that highland, smaller-bodied tarsiers habitually communicate at high frequencies in contexts where Sulawesian and Philippine tarsier species use lower frequencies, and T. pumilus shows an expected relationship between vocal frequency and body mass.

- BiologyInternational Journal of Primatology
- 2010
Morphologically, the new species is similar to other Sulawesi lowland tarsiers and can be distinguished from its congeners via a characteristic duet song and its yellow-brown pelage coloration and a copper-colored throat.

A signature of purifying selection for OPN1SW is detected, indicating that colour vision confers an adaptive advantage to tarsiers, and it is found that the colour vision of T. bancanus is advantageous for discriminating prey under twilight that is enriched in shorter wavelengths, a plausible idiosyncrasy of understorey habitats in Borneo.

Positional Behavior and Social Organization of the Philippine Tarsier ( Tarsius syrichta )
- Biology
Preliminary data on the positional behavior and habitat use of the Philippine tarsier, Tarsius syrichta, which was studied in its natural habitat on the island of Leyte, supports some aspects of NmMITZ'S (1977) model of anatomical and behavioral specialization among tarsiers.

The History and Mystery of the Mountain Tarsier, Tarsius pumilus

Fossil and biogeographic evidence are consistent with the hypothesis that T. pumilus is the sister-taxon to all other extant tarsier species, and it is argued that "mountain tarsiers" is a more apt common name than previously suggested.

This work investigated the social system of the recently described Tarsius lariang, which researchers have never studied before, and conducted field observations and sampling in central Sulawesi, Indonesia, suggesting a predominantly monogamous social and genetic mating system.

A new, critically endangered species of tarsier is described from the remote island of Siau, North Sulawesi, based on distinguishing characteristics of the tail tuft, pelage coloration, skull, and vocalizations and genetic evidence indicates that its probable sister species, T. sangirensis, is a relatively ancient clade.

Integrated data on home range size and travel distance indicate that slightly disturbed forest is as favorable to these animals as undisturbed habitat, however, with increasing anthropogenic effects, the living conditions of the tarsiers appear to deteriorate, resulting in the necessity for larger home and night ranges.
