In 1984 we initiated a study of factors associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in industrial workers by using a case definition based on both symptoms and electrophysiologic findings. Medical history, lifestyle factors, and symptoms were assessed by interview, and electrodiagnostic studies were used to measure median nerve function.
