  • The major cause of the long-term hardening of a bitumen in a sprayed seal is attack by atmospheric oxygen. This chemical reaction is controlled by the rate of diffusion of the oxygen into the bitumen films in the seal. The oxidation process has been modelled by a hypothetical bitumen film of uniform thickness maintained at a constant temperature.
