Abstract Laboratory studies are presented which show that the production rate of nitrous and nitric acids from the heterogeneous reaction of NO 2 [2NO 2 + H 2 O → HONO + HNO 3 ] on materials having high surface roughness is significantly high, and that nitrous acid produced and adsorbed on the surface is released in the gas phase, the extent of release depending on the adsorptive properties of the surface and the thermodynamic conditions.
