We study a sample of bright, long Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) gamma-ray burst (GRB) light curves in the 200 s before the detection of the GRB prompt emission. We find that in a sizable fraction of cases (∼20 per cent) there is evidence of emission above the background coming from the same direction as the GRB. This emission is characterized by a softer spectrum with respect to the main spectrum and contains a small fraction (0.1‐1 per cent) of the total event counts. The…

Precursors in Swift Gamma Ray Bursts with Redshift

We study a sample of gamma-ray bursts detected by the Swift satellite with known redshift which show a precursor in the Swift BAT light curve. We analyze the spectra of the precursors and compare

Precursors in Short Gamma-Ray Bursts as a Possible Probe of Progenitors

We extract 18 candidate short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) with precursors from 660 SGRBs observed by the Fermi and Swift satellites, and carry out a comprehensive analysis of their temporal and spectral

Population synthesis of gamma-ray bursts with precursor activity and the spinar paradigm

We study statistical properties of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) produced by the collapsing cores of WR stars in binary systems. Fast rotation of the cores enables a two-stage collapse scenario,

Characteristics of Two-episode Emission Patterns in Fermi Long Gamma-Ray Bursts

Two-episode emission components separated by quiescent gaps in the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been observed in the Swift era, but there is a lack of spectral information due to

Multiwavelength Observations of GRB 050820A: An Exceptionally Energetic Event Followed from Start to Finish

We present observations of the unusually bright and long γ-ray burst GRB 050820A, one of the best sampled broadband data sets in the Swift era. The γ-ray light curve is marked by a soft precursor

Catalogue of isolated emission episodes in gamma-ray bursts from Fermi, Swift and BATSE

We report a comprehensive catalog of emission episodes within long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that are separated by a quiescent period during which gamma-ray emission falls below the background level.

One of the most elusive features of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is the sporadic emission prior to the main prompt event observed in at least ∼15% of cases. These precursors have spectral and temporal

Short-Duration Gamma-Ray Bursts

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) display a bimodal duration distribution with a separation between the short- and long-duration bursts at about 2 s. The progenitors of long GRBs have been identified as

Precursors of short gamma-ray bursts in the SPI-ACS/INTEGRAL experiment

We have analyzed the light curves of 519 short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected in the SPI-ACS/INTEGRAL experiment from December 2002 toMay 2014 to search for precursors (a possible activity of the
