Battery storage is essential for the future smart grid. The inevitable battery degradation renders the battery lifetime volatile and highly dependent on battery dispatch, and thus incurs opportunity cost. This paper rigorously derives the degradation cost function of battery storage for power system dispatch. We first derive the intertemporal optimality condition that guarantees the long-term dispatch optimality when short-term dispatch is made. Then we prove that the solution to a cost-form…

A Two-Layer Energy Management System for Microgrids With Hybrid Energy Storage Considering Degradation Costs

This paper presents a two-layer predictive energy management system (EMS) for microgrids with hybrid ESS consisting of batteries and supercapacitors, in which the upper layer EMS minimizes the total operational cost and the lower layer EMS eliminates fluctuations induced by forecast errors.

Factoring the Cycle Aging Cost of Batteries Participating in Electricity Markets

This paper model battery cycle aging using a piecewise linear cost function, an approach that provides a close approximation of the cycle aging mechanism of electrochemical batteries and can be incorporated easily into existing market dispatch programs.

Optimal scheduling of electric vehicle charging and vehicle-to-grid services at household level including battery degradation and price uncertainty

This study presents a scheduling algorithm for EVs under a real time pricing scheme with uncertainty that explicitly takes into account the cost of battery degradation not only when used to provide services to the system but also in terms of the EV utilisation for motion.

Optimal Bidding Strategy of Battery Storage in Power Markets Considering Performance-Based Regulation and Battery Cycle Life

A novel bidding model is incorporated into a profit maximization model to determine the optimal bids in day-ahead energy, spinning reserve, and regulation markets and a decomposed online calculation method to compute cycle life under different operational strategies is proposed to reduce the complexity of the model.

Toward Optimal Energy Management of Microgrids via Robust Two-Stage Optimization

The combined solution meets the need of handling large uncertainties in the load demands and renewable generation, and provides an efficient solution under limited computational resource which approximately optimizes the long-term average operating cost while meeting the quality-of-service requirements.

Cooperation of Wind Power and Battery Storage to Provide Frequency Regulation in Power Markets

In the future power system with high penetration of renewables, renewable energy is expected to undertake part of the responsibility for frequency regulation, just as the conventional generators.

On the Determination of Battery Energy Storage Capacity and Short-Term Power Dispatch of a Wind Farm

A methodology on the design of a wind farm battery energy storage system to realize power dispatchability is described. Based on the statistical long-term wind speed data captured at the farm, a
