Visible Light Communication (VLC) consists in using High-Brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs) not only for lighting, but also for transmitting information by changing the light intensity rapidly. One of the most important problems of VLC is that the HB-LED drivers that have been proposed for achieving the highest bit rates offer low power efficiency. The reason is that since these HB-LED drivers must be able to reproduce fast current waveforms, the use of Linear Power Amplifiers (LPAs) has been adopted…
A Simple Resonant Switched-Capacitor LED Driver Employed as a Fast Pulse-Based Transmitter for VLC Applications
A resonant switched-capacitor (RSC) dc–dc converter for visible light communication (VLC) applications operating as both high-efficiency power converter and fast-response data transmitter that allows for higher switching frequency and higher slew rate so that the VLC functionality can be embedded into the power stage without an auxiliary switch.
Reproducing Multicarrier Modulation Schemes for Visible Light Communication With the Ripple Modulation Technique
It is demonstrated that the ripple modulation can be used to reproduce multicarrier modulation (MCM) schemes by considering the envelope and the instantaneous phase of the communication signal.

Power-Efficient VLC Transmitter Based on Pulse-Width Modulated DC–DC Converters and the Split of the Power
An HB-LED driver made up of two DC–DC power converters is presented, which achieves an overall efficiency around 90% and is able to reproduce a wide range of digital modulation schemes, including the preferred one for wireless communications: orthogonal frequency division multiplexing.
On the Role of Power Electronics in Visible Light Communication
The proposed HB-LED drivers enable the implementation of VLC transmitters without sacrificing one of the most important advantages of HB- LED lighting, namely, its high-power efficiency.
Efficient Visible Light Communication Transmitters Based on Switching-Mode dc-dc Converters
The design strategy presented allows us to incorporate VLC into SSL, achieving high bit rates without damaging the power efficiency of LED lighting.
Reproducing Single-Carrier Digital Modulation Schemes for VLC by Controlling the First Switching Harmonic of the DC–DC Power Converter Output Voltage Ripple
To the authors' knowledge, the ratio between the bit rate achieved and the switching frequency of the dc–dc power converter presented in this paper is the highest that can be found in the literature.
A digitally controlled DC/DC converter for an RF power amplifier
In the complete experimental system, which consists of the digitally controlled dc/dc converter and a class-E RFPA operating at 10GHz, experimental results show that the overall system efficiency is significantly improved over a wide range of RFPA output power levels.
