Social-class discrimination is evident in many societies around the world, but little is known about its impact on the poor or its role as an explanatory variable in the link between socioeconomic status and health. The current study tested the extent to which perceived discrimination explains socioeconomic gradients in physical health. Participants were 252 adolescents (51% male, 49% female; mean age = 17.51 years, SD = 1.03 years) who participated in Wave 3 of an ongoing longitudinal study…

Longitudinal Health Consequences of Socioeconomic Disadvantage: Examining Perceived Discrimination as a Mediator
TLDR
Examining the mediating role of discrimination in the longitudinal association between SED and self-rated health found that perceived discrimination partially mediated this longitudinal association, explaining 22% of the total effect.
Income-related health inequalities: does perceived discrimination matter?
TLDR
The results emphasise the importance of a more in-depth study of discrimination in relation to socioeconomic health inequalities and recommend to take account of the complex interplay between discrimination and both the socioeconomic and ethnic background.
Introduction to the Special Issue: The Impact of Poverty and Rural Status on Youth With Chronic Health Conditions
TLDR
It is argued that closer attention to the complex role of poverty in pediatric chronic illness outcomes will allow the field to move beyond an exclusive focus on the detrimental effects of lower SES and into a more holistic approach to health and psychosocial outcomes.
Socioeconomic Status, Income Inequality, and Health Complaints: A Basic Psychological Needs Perspective
Socioeconomic status (SES) and income inequality are now recognized as important determinants of health, and there is growing interest in uncovering the intermediary psychosocial pathways through
Mental Health Among Black Youth Experiencing Socioeconomic Microaggressions
Microaggressions, or subtle forms of discrimination, are associated with poor mental and physical health as well as chronic stress and disease. The current study sought to add to the microaggressions
Perceived Age Discrimination as a Mediator of the Association Between Income Inequality and Older People's Self-Rated Health in the European Region.
TLDR
Whether the psychosocial factors of perceived age discrimination and (lack of) social capital may help explain the adverse effect of inequality on older people's health is examined.
Social determinants of ethnic minority health in Europe
TLDR
It is shown that social determinants at various levels may play an important role in shaping ethnic minority health in Europe and better understanding of these determinants and their impact may help develop effective social interventions.
Impact of social class on health: The mediating role of health self-management
TLDR
The health self-management ability of the lower class, such as access to healthy and nutritious food and evaluate their own health status, is worse than that of the higher class, which leads to physical and mental health inequality between the high and the low classes.
Poverty and the Development of Psychopathology
Poverty and low socioeconomic status (SES) play a profound role in the etiology and trajectories of child psychopathology. In order to better understand how poverty/SES can influence child

Childhood Poverty and Health
TLDR
The effects of childhood poverty on stress dysregulation are largely explained by cumulative risk exposure accompanying childhood poverty.
Pathways between socioeconomic determinants of health
TLDR
Analyses of the predictive power of socioeconomic indicators on health run the risk of being fruitless, if interrelations between various indicators are neglected.
Racial Differences in Physical and Mental Health
TLDR
Findings underscore the need for research efforts to identify the complex ways in which economic and non-economic forms of discrimination relate to each other and combine with socio-economic position and other risk factors and resources to affect health.
The prevalence, distribution, and mental health correlates of perceived discrimination in the United States.
TLDR
Results show that perceived discrimination is common in the total population, and given its high prevalence, wide distribution, and strong associations with mental health, perceived discrimination needs to be treated much more seriously than in the past in future studies of stress and mental health.
Psychological perspectives on pathways linking socioeconomic status and physical health.
TLDR
A review of research that has examined stress and its associated distress, and social and personal resources as pathways, highlights work on biomarkers and biological pathways related to SES that can serve as intermediate outcomes in future studies.
Discrimination and racial disparities in health: evidence and needed research
TLDR
Advancing the understanding of the relationship between perceived discrimination and health will require more attention to situating discrimination within the context of other health-relevant aspects of racism, measuring it comprehensively and accurately, assessing its stressful dimensions, and identifying the mechanisms that link discrimination to health.
Socio‐economic differentials in peripheral biology: Cumulative allostatic load
TLDR
Evidence linking socio‐economic status (SES) to “downstream” peripheral biology to multiple major biological regulatory systems over the life course is examined, followed by evidence of the resulting cumulative, overall burdens of physiological dysregulation seen among those of lower SES.
Multiple risk exposure as a potential explanatory mechanism for the socioeconomic status–health gradient

TLDR
The convergence of exposure to multiple physical and psychosocial risk factors accompanying disadvantage may account for a portion of SES gradients in health in both childhood and adulthood.
