The niacin skin phenomenon reflects a prostaglandin (PG) mediated flush and oedema reaction. As PG metabolism is linked to breakdown of membrane lipids, diminished sensitivity to niacin application suggests potential disturbance in membrane phospholipid-arachidonic acid-PG pathways.
