Macrophages and by-products are important in plaque destabilization in atherosclerosis. Ultra-small superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may be suitable for the detection of macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques.
