The cost of data transfers over PCI-Express often limits application performance on traditional discrete GPUs. To address this, AMD Fusion introduces a novel architecture that fuses the CPU and GPU onto a single die and connects the two with a high-performance memory controller. This architecture features a shared memory space between CPU and GPU, enabling several new memory access techniques that are not available on discrete architectures.
