Post-natal parental care in a Cretaceous diapsid from northeastern China

Post-natal parental care seems to have evolved numerous times in vertebrates. Among extant amniotes, it is present in crocodilians, birds, and mammals. However, evidence of this behavior is extremely rare in the fossil record and is only reported for two types of dinosaurs, and a varanopid ‘pelycosaur’. Here we report new evidence for post-natal parental care in Philydrosaurus, a choristodere, from the Yixian Formation of western Liaoning Province, China. We review the fossil record of…

Varanopid from the Carboniferous of Nova Scotia reveals evidence of parental care in amniotes
- Environmental Science, BiologyNature Ecology & Evolution
- 2019
A fossil synapsid from the Carboniferous period of Nova Scotia that displays evidence of parental care is reported that adds to growing evidence that parental care was more widespread among Palaeozoic synapsids than previously thought and provides data permitting the identification of potential ontogeny-dependent traits within varanopids.
Aggregations and parental care in the Early Triassic basal cynodonts Galesaurus planiceps and Thrinaxodon liorhinus
- Environmental Science, BiologyPeerJ

An extensive survey of other aggregations found in these two basal cynodont taxa revealed six other unequivocal cases of aggregations in Thrinaxodon, with examples of same- age aggregations among immature or adult individuals as well as mixed-age aggregations between subadult and adult individuals.

Evolution of viviparous reproduction in Paleozoic and Mesozoic reptiles.
- BiologyThe International journal of developmental biology
- 2014
P paleontological evidence indicates that extinct viviparous reptiles had internal fertilization, amniotic fetal membranes, and placentas that sustained developing embryos via provision of respiratory gases, water, calcium, and possibly organic nutrients.

Viviparity and K-Selected Life History in a Mesozoic Marine Plesiosaur (Reptilia, Sauropterygia)
- Environmental Science, GeographyScience

Quantitative analysis indicates that plesiosaurs gave birth to large, probably single progeny, and the combination of viviparity, large offspring size, and small brood number differs markedly from the pattern seen in other marine reptiles but does resemble the K-selected strategy of all extant marine mammals and a few extant lizards.
