Salivary free cortisol concentrations in the first 30 min after awakening were assessed in 12 healthy army recruits at the beginning, middle and end of an 11-week intensive physical training course. To ensure strict adherence to protocol saliva collection was supervised and collected on each sampling day immediately on waking and again 15 and 30 min later.
