Abstract The population structure of the land crab Johngarthia lagostoma was studied on Ascension Island from 2005-2007, predominantly during the period of the seaward breeding migrations; approximately 4000 crabs were examined. Sex ratio varied according to location of sampling. Males predominated in permanent residential areas on high ground. Sexes were equal along migration routes to the sea. Females predominated in the breeding sites on the shore. Very few immature crabs (< 60 mm CW) were…
Reproduction in the Land Crab Johngarthia lagostoma on Ascension Island
TLDR
Reproduction was studied in the land crab Johngarthia lagostoma on Ascension Island in the central South Atlantic from 2005 to 2008, where both males and females migrate, but with females in greater numbers.
Size distribution and Colour pattern in the Freshwater Crab Travancoriana schirnerae
The present study analyzed the population size frequency distribution and colour pattern in the freshwater crab, Travancoriana schirnerae inhabiting the areca plantations of Mananthavady, Wayanad,
Some biological aspects of the portunid crab Charybdis natator from the Gulf of Suez, Red sea
TLDR
The population showed sex differences in the size frequency distributions, with males reaching larger size than females and females outnumbered females during September-November, and the effectiveness of the closed season that runs in the Gulf of Suez on the population of C. natator was discussed.
Some ecological aspects of the gecarcinid land crab, Cardisoma armatum Herklots, 1851 (Crustacea, Brachyura, Gecarcinidae) from the estuarine region of the Comoe River, Côte d’Ivoire
TLDR
The data show an evidence of a serious problem of recruitment in the population of this crab related to degradation of the habitats and heavy harvesting pressures, highlighting the necessity of developing and implanting management and protection strategies of this crustacean.
Population Structure of the Christmas Island Blue Crab, Discoplax hirtipes (Decapoda: Brachyura: Gecarcinidae) on Christmas Island, Indian Ocean
TLDR
During the survey, few juveniles were found, which could suggest an ageing population of D. hirtipes, which is potentially worrying for a species that due to its restricted distribution continues to be especially vulnerable to outside threats, including that of aggressive invasive species and long term habitat destruction.
Influence of roadkill during breeding migration on the sex ratio of land crab (Sesarma haematoche)
Adult land crabs generally live on land while their larvae live in the sea. In the case of Sesarma haematoche , female crabs migrate from land to sea to release the larvae at the high tide of syzygy
Genetic structure and diversity of the island-restricted endangered land crab, Johngarthia lagostoma (H. Milne Edwards, 1837)
TLDR
The large differentiation observed indicates that three discrete land crab evolutionary significant units should be considered: Ascension Island, Trindade, and Atol das Rocas/Fernando de Noronha.
Population biology of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Decapoda: Ucididae) in an estuary from semiarid northeastern Brazil.
TLDR
Analyzing the population parameters indicated that the population of U. cordatus in the Jaguaribe River mangrove is stable, however, constant monitoring of the population is required to detect any changes in the population attributes that may affect this stability.
Population Structure of Freshwater Crab P. Masoniana (Henderson) in the Lower Reaches of Chenab River, J&k State, India
TLDR
The population structure of freshwater crab of Paratelphusa masoniana (Henderson) was studied in the lower reaches of river Chenab in J&K, India and the overall sex ratio was found to be 1:1.07 indicating that females were numerically more in compared to males.
Polymorphism in the chelae of mature males of the land crabs Johngarthia lagostoma and Epigrapsus spp.
The growth of the chelae of mature males was examined in three gecarcinid land crabs — Johngarthia lagostoma on Ascension Island, Epigrapsus notatus on Taiwan, and E. politus on Moorea. Chelar

POPULATION BIOLOGY OF THE BLACK LAND CRAB, GECARCINUS RURICOLA, IN THE SAN ANDRES ARCHIPELAGO, WESTERN CARIBBEAN
TLDR
The growth patterns of the chelae resulted in modest levels of both heterochely and sexual dimorphism; this has implications for the pattern of exploitation.
Field Observations of Moulting and Moult Increment in the Red Land Crab, Gecarcoidea Natalis (Brachyura, Gecarcinidae), on Christmas Island (Indian Ocean)
TLDR
Observations of moulting red crabs held in semi-natural conditions in primary rain forest near Murray Hill in the western area of the island are described.
REPRODUCTION OF EPIGRAPSUS NOTATUS (BRACHYURA: GECARCINIDAE) IN TAIWAN
TLDR
The unusual larval release behavior and choice of surge channels as release sites are suggested as adaptations to life on land, to reduce the chances of being swept away by waves.
The breeding behaviour and migrations of the terrestrial crab Gecarcoidea natalis (Decapoda: Brachyura)
TLDR
The breeding migrations of the Christmas Island red crab were monitored at plateau and shoreline locations from November 1979 to May 1983, where males fought over possession of burrows.
SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE GENERAL BIOLOGY OF THE LAND CRAB, CARDISOMA GUANHUMI (LATREILLE), IN SOUTH FLORIDA
TLDR
Land crabs of the genus Cardisoma, Family Gecarcinidae, are an immiportant ele ment of the fauna of many tropical coastal and estuarine areas, with different species on the east and west coasts of each continent.
A mass recruitment event in the land crab Gecarcinus ruricola (Linnaeus, 1758) (Brachyura: Grapsoidea: Gecarcinidae), and a description of the megalop
TLDR
A mass return to land of the megalop of the land crab Gecarcinus ruricola is reported, which is the first detailed report of larval return in this species, and the most detailed report for any gecarcinid.
