Population Genetics of Gene Function
@article{Gallo2013PopulationGO, title={Population Genetics of Gene Function}, author={Ignacio Gallo}, journal={Bulletin of Mathematical Biology}, year={2013}, volume={75}, pages={1082-1103} }
This paper shows that differentiating the lifetimes of two phenotypes independently from their fertility can lead to a qualitative change in the equilibrium of a population: since survival and reproduction are distinct functional aspects of an organism, this observation contributes to extend the population-genetical characterisation of biological function. To support this statement a mathematical relation is derived to link the lifetime ratio T1/T2, which parameterizes the different survival…

A stochastic population model is presented that combines cooperative interactions of the type often used in physics with the process of reproduction and death familiar to biology and why such interlocking may be of interest to both fields is referred to.

The approach provides a theoretical basis for the use of a 2 x 2 contingency table to compare fixed differences and polymorphic sites with silent sites and amino acid replacements and suggests the estimate that the number of amino acids in the enzyme that are susceptible to favorable mutation is in the range 2-23 at any one time.

This article proposes to examine some of the population consequences of a system of different isoalleles whose frequency in the population is determined by the mutation rate and by random drift, and considers three possibilities: A system of selectively neutral isoallels, a systemof mutually heterotic alleles, and a mixture of heterotic and harmful mutants.
