Populating the landscape: A Top down approach

We put forward a framework for cosmology that combines the string landscape with no boundary initial conditions. In this framework, amplitudes for alternative histories for the universe are calculated with final boundary conditions only. This leads to a top down approach to cosmology, in which the histories of the universe depend on the precise question asked. We study the observational consequences of no boundary initial conditions on the landscape, and outline a scheme to test the theory…

No-boundary measure of the universe.

The no-boundary proposal for homogeneous isotropic closed universes with a cosmological constant and a scalar field with a quadratic potential predicts classical behavior at late times if the scalarField is large enough.

Predicting a prior for Planck

The quantum state of the universe combined with the structure of the landscape potential implies a prior that specifies predictions for observations. We compute the prior for CMB related observables

Vacuum bubble in an inhomogeneous cosmology

We study the propagation of bubbles of new vacuum in a radially inhomogeneous Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi background that includes a cosmological constant. This exemplifies the classical evolution of a

No-boundary measure in the regime of eternal inflation

The no-boundary wave function (NBWF) specifies a measure for prediction in cosmology that selects inflationary histories and remains well behaved for spatially large or infinite universes. This paper

Sinks in the landscape, Boltzmann brains and the cosmological constant problem

This paper extends a recent investigation of the string theory landscape (Ceresole et al 2006 Phys. Rev. D 74 086010), where it was found that the decay rate of de Sitter (dS) vacua to a collapsing

One Bubble to Rule Them All

We apply the principles of quantum mechanics and quantum cosmology to predict probabilities for our local observations of a universe undergoing false vacuum eternal inflation. At a sufficiently

Classical universes of the no-boundary quantum state

We analyze the origin of the quasiclassical realm from the no-boundary proposal for the Universe's quantum state in a class of minisuperspace models. The models assume homogeneous, isotropic, closed

Cosmic eggs to relax the cosmological constant

In theories with extra dimensions, the cosmological hierarchy problem can be thought of as the unnaturally large radius of the observable universe in Kaluza-Klein units. We sketch a dynamical

Islands in the landscape

The string theory landscape consists of many metastable de Sitter vacua, populated by eternal inflation. Tunneling between these vacua gives rise to a dynamical system, which asymptotically settles

Measure problem in cosmology

The Hamiltonian structure of general relativity provides a natural canonical measure on the space of all classical universes, i.e., the multiverse. We review this construction and show how one can

Why does inflation start at the top of the hill

We show why the universe started in an unstable de Sitter state. The quantum origin of our universe implies one must take a ``top down'' approach to the problem of initial conditions in cosmology, in

Probabilities in the inflationary multiverse

Inflationary cosmology leads to the picture of a ‘multiverse’, involving an infinite number of (spatially infinite) post-inflationary thermalized regions, called pocket universes. In the context of

Birth of inflationary universes

A cosmological model is proposed in which the Universe is created by quantum tunneling from ''nothing'' into a de Sitter space. The tunneling is described by a de Sitter-- p Hawking--Moss instanton.

Can the universe afford inflation

Cosmic inflation is envisioned as the 'most likely' start for the observed universe. To give substance to this claim, a framework is needed in which inflation can compete with other scenarios and the

Is there a string theory landscape

We examine recent claims of a large set of flux compactification solutions of string theory. We conclude that the arguments for AdS solutions are plausible. The analysis of meta-stable dS solutions

M-theory observables for cosmological space-times

: We discuss the construction of the analog of an S-matrix for space-times that begin with a Big-Bang and asymptote to an FRW universe with nonnegative cosmological constant. When the cosmological

Cosmology and the S matrix

We study conditions for the existence of asymptotic observables in cosmology. With the exception of de Sitter space, the thermal properties of accelerating universes permit arbitrarily long

Multiple universes, cosmic coincidences, and other dark matters

Even when completely and consistently formulated, a fundamental theory of physics and cosmological boundary conditions may not give unambiguous and unique predictions for the universe we observe;

Brane new world

We study a Randall-Sundrum cosmological scenario consisting of a domain wall in anti\char21{}de Sitter space with a strongly coupled large N conformal field theory living on the wall. The AdS-CFT

Dark matter and the anthropic principle

We evaluate the problem of galaxy formation in the landscape approach to phenomenology of the axion sector. With other parameters of standard $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$CDM cosmology held fixed, the
