Commonly referred to as “poppers,” inhaled nitrites have a long history of abuse. Poppers are rapid‐onset, short‐acting potent vasodilators that produce a rush characterized by warm sensations and feelings of dizziness. Poppers sometimes are used to facilitate anal intercourse because of their actions on the anal sphincter. Epidemiologically, the frequent use of nitrites by men who have sex with men has led some experts to implicate these chemicals in the pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma and… Expand
Lessons of the month 3: Intravenous poppers abuse: case report, management and possible complications.
TLDR
The first published case of intravenous poppers abuse is presented, where a 34-year-old man injected poppers intravenously for recreational purposes and suffered from dyspnoea and general discomfort, and was rapidly discharged after treatment with toluidine blue. Expand
Amyl Nitrite-Induced Hemolytic Anemia: Acute Therapy and Prevention
TLDR
A 62-year-old man with a past medical history of glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency presenting with severe hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia after recreational use of inhaled nitrites is presented. Expand
When “Chems” Meet Sex: A Rising Phenomenon Called “ChemSex”
TLDR
More specific resources to face high risks of infections and HIV transmission are required in bisexual and homosexual individuals having SUID: sex under the influence of drugs. Expand
Poppers: legal highs with questionable contents? A case series of poppers maculopathy
TLDR
It seems that isopropyl nitrite is toxic to the fovea and can cause significant visual disturbance, particularly given their exemption from the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. Expand
Sometimes Poppers Are Not Poppers: Huffing as an Emergent Health Concern Among MSM Substance Users
TLDR
Huffing solvents carries considerably more health risk than using alkyl nitrite poppers, but this may not be recognized by clinicians, who usually have little knowledge of either solvent or propellant inhalants, or MSM, who do not have a cultural history of huffing. Expand
Intoxication by Massive Ingestion of Poppers: A Case Report
TLDR
This case mainly brings to light the strong hemodynamic effect of a massive oral intake of poppers and its fast kinetics, poorly described in literature. Expand
maculopathy contents ? A case series of poppers Poppers : legal highs with questionable
Background Poppers are volatile alkyl nitrite compounds that are inhaled to enhance sexual experience and for their psychoactive effects. A less wellknown side effect is foveal maculopathy, which hasExpand
Long-term nitrite inhalant exposure and cancer risk in MSM
TLDR
Long-term heavy popper use is associated with elevated risk of some virus-associated cancers with causes related to human papillomavirus, HHV-8, and Epstein–Barr virus infections in older HIV-uninfected MSM independent of sexual behavior and immunological parameters. Expand
Long-term nitrite inhalant exposure and cancer risk in men who have sex with men: a prospective cohort study.
TLDR
Long-term heavy popper use is associated with elevated risk of some virus-associated cancers with etiologies related to HPV, HHV-8, and EBV infections in older HIV-uninfected MSM independent of sexual behavior and immunological parameters. Expand
Recognition and management of complications of new recreational drug use
TLDR
This review aims to help treating physicians recognise and manage complications associated with the use of new drugs in clubs, including methylenedioxymethamfetamine, ephedrine, gamma-hydroxybutyrate; gamma-butyrolactone, 1,4-butanediol, flunitrazepam, ketamine, and nitrites. Expand

TLDR
Prevalence of nitrite use among male homosexuals is very high, and almost every reported case of Kaposi's sarcoma during the past three years includes a history of priorNitrite use. Expand
Toxicity, Immunosuppressive Effects and Carcinogenic Potential of Volatile Nitrites: Possible Relationship to Kaposi's Sarcoma
TLDR
Nitrites should continue to be considered as a possible cofactor in the etiology of Kaposi's Sarcoma among male homosexuals and possibly those with other manifestations of AIDS. Expand
The poppers-HIV connection.
TLDR
Research has found that popper use suppresses natural killer cell function, which increases vulnerability to infectious agents, produces sustained alterations in the immune system, and may be a Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) cofactor. Expand
Disease Manifestation among Homosexual Men with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: A Possible Role of Nitrites in Kaposi's Sarcoma
TLDR
This study suggests that the use of nitrite inhalants may be a cofactor in the development of Kaposi's sarcoma and by identifying other cofactors, investigators may be able to define additional opportunities for prevention of theDevelopment of AIDS. Expand
Poppers, Kaposi's sarcoma, and HIV infection: empirical example of a strong confounding effect?
TLDR
Results show that HIV infection may have confounded the poppers-Kaposi's sarcoma association, but it cannot be ruled out that HIV did not qualify as a confounder because it was either an intermediate variable or an effect modifier of the association between popper inhalation and Kaposi's Sarcoma.
