It is now nearly six years since recombinant human erythropoietin was licensed for the treatment of renal anaemia, and numerous clinical trials worldwide are currently investigating its use in other (non-renal) anaemic conditions. Experience has shown that 90-95% of patients with renal anaemia will respond to erythropoietin [1], although there is a small group who show either no response or a blunted response [2,3].
