The ponderomotive effects which arise in a single species plasma, i.e., a nonneutral plasma, are considered. The important difference from a neutral plasma is that quasineutral density cavities given by δn/n0≂−‖E‖2/16πn0T cannot arise in a single species plasma. Instead, it is found that the ponderomotive force is balanced by self‐consistent space charge fields, and results in δn≂∇2‖E∥‖2/16πmω2, where ω is the frequency and E∥ refers to the wave electric field parallel to the confining magnetic…
Space charge effects in rf traps: Ponderomotive concept and stroboscopic analysis
Exact solutions for one-dimensional (1D) plasma dynamics in an rf trap are known when space charge effects are neglected [K. Shah and H. S. Ramachandran, Phys. Plasmas 15, 062303 (2008)]. In this
Analytic, nonlinearly exact solutions for an rf confined plasma
RF confined electron plasmas are of importance in Paul traps [W. Paul, Rev. Mod. Phys. 62, 531 (1990)]. The stability of such plasmas is unclear and statistical heating arguments have been advanced
Fluid and kinetic nonlinearities of near-acoustic plasma waves
Large amplitude, near-acoustic plasma waves have a temperature-dependent harmonic content and nonlinear frequency shifts. On cold plasmas, experiments show that fluid nonlinearities dominate, and the
Plasma response to nonlinear time-periodic electric fields in one dimension
Plasma response to spatially nonuniform time-periodic electric fields is of importance in many applications. For the case of a spatially linear monochromatic electric field in Paul traps, exact
Stabilizing effect of a nonresonant radio frequency drive on the m=1 diocotron instability
It has been experimentally shown that the rotation radius of a non-neutral plasma column around the longitudinal axis of a Malmberg–Penning trap experiences a growth in amplitude (m=1 diocotron
Novel electrodynamic trapping mechanism for neutral, polar particles
AbstractA conceptually new trapping mechanism for neutral, polar particles is introduced and discussed. Unlike existing mechanisms that are based on oscillating saddle-point potentials or rotating
Double-layer particlespout in strong and nonuniform microwave fields
We report a new phenomenon named particlespout in which the particles spout in a specially designed microwave cavity. An ionic crystal of sodium chloride was heated in the microwave applicator.
