The effects of feeding of 6-propylthiouracil (6-PTU) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) independently and in combination and administration (ip) of a single dose of triiodothyronine (T3) (2.5 microg/100 g body wt) along with feeding of 6-PTU and PUFA were studied in rat brain. Dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxy indole acetic acid (5-HIAA), norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EPI) contents were assayed in the hypothalamus and cerebral cortex regions. Relationship between the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on brain plasticity and the improvement on cognition and behavior in individuals with autism spectrum disorder
It is clear that ASD is one of the neurological conditions associated with an impairment in neuronal plasticity; therefore, PUFAs-rich diet improvements on cognition and behavioral deficits in individuals with autism, could be involved with the regulation of neuronal processes implicated in the atypical brain plasticity related with this neurodevelopmental disorder.
Vitamin E and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation in schizophrenia patients treated with haloperidol
This study indicates that supplementation with vitamin E and EPUFAs may improve the antioxidative defense, especially glutathione system, while there is no major effect on symptoms severity.
