In this work we present a method for the production of clean, renewable electrical energy from the exchange of solutions with different salinities. Activated carbon films are coated with negatively or positively charged polyelectrolytes using well-established adsorption methods. When two oppositely charged coated films are placed in contact with an ionic solution, the potential difference between them will be equal to the difference between their Donnan potentials, and hence, energy can be…

Assembly of Soft Electrodes and Ion Exchange Membranes for Capacitive Deionization
TLDR
A method for adsorbing ions from aqueous solutions on charged interfaces using highly porous electrodes is studied and it is shown that the amount of ions adsorbed and the ratio between ions removed and electrons transported reach superior values, also associated with a faster kinetics of the process.
Use of Soft Electrodes in Capacitive Deionization of Solutions.
TLDR
This work proposes a new approach inspired in the electrokinetics of soft particles: a layer of polyelectrolyte coats the carbon electrodes, converting them in a sort of "soft" electrode pair, which can be successfully employed in capacitive deionization.
Multiionic effects on the capacitance of porous electrodes.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that the presence of tiny amounts of divalent ions in the bulk is enough to dominate the EDL behavior, and hence, its capacitance, energy storage, and desalination properties.
Capacitive mixing with electrodes of the same kind for energy production from salinity differences.
TLDR
A cell scheme with electrodes of the same kind which can be operated with a CapMix cycle based on a concentration cell with identical electrodes dipped into two compartments separated by a non-perm-selective porous diaphragm, which shows that the technique is competitive with respect to the other CapMix techniques, with the relevant advantage that it makes use of only one kind of electrode.
Polyelectrolyte‐Coated Copper Hexacyanoferrate and Bismuth Oxychloride Electrodes for Efficient Salinity Gradient Energy Recovery in Capacitive Mixing
A mixing entropy battery (MEB) based on a pair of cationic and anionic electrodes is a novel method to extract salinity gradient (SG) energy. However, so far, only precious AgCl electrodes are

A prototype cell for extracting energy from a water salinity difference by means of double layer expansion in nanoporous carbon electrodes
Electrical energy can be obtained from the controlled mixing of fresh (river) and saline (sea) water. Existing technologies such as pressure retarded osmosis and reverse electrodialysis make use of
Direct power production from a water salinity difference in a membrane-modified supercapacitor flow cell.
TLDR
The results demonstrate that alternating the flow of saline and fresh water through a capacitive cell allows direct autogeneration of voltage and current and consequently leads to power generation.
Effect of additional charging and current density on the performance of Capacitive energy extraction based on Donnan Potential
The difference in the salt concentrations of river and seawater implies that wherever they mix, energy could be extracted from the salinity gradient. This is a renewable and clean means of generating
Microbial reverse electrodialysis cells for synergistically enhanced power production.
TLDR
Results show that the combination of an MFC and a RED stack synergistically increases performance relative to the individual systems, producing a new type of system that can be used to more efficiently capture salinity driven energy from seawater and river water.
