We study numerically the crystallization of a hard-sphere mixture with 8% polydispersity. Although often used as a model glass former, for small system sizes we observe crystallization in molecular dynamics simulations. This opens the possibility to study the competition between crystallization and structural relaxation of the melt, which typically is out of reach due to the disparate timescales. We quantify the dependence of relaxation and crystallization times on density and system size. For…

Confinement-induced demixing and crystallization

We simulate a strongly size-disperse hard-sphere fluid confined between two parallel, hard walls. We find that confinement induces crystallization into n-layered hexagonal lattices and a novel

Kinetic Crystallisation Instability in Liquids with Short-Ranged Attractions

Liquids in systems with spherically symmetric interactions are not thermodynamically stable when the range of the attraction is reduced sufficiently. However, these metastable liquids have lifetimes

Employing artificial neural networks to find reaction coordinates and pathways for self-assembly

This work demonstrates for the self-assembly of two single-stranded DNA fragments into a ring-like structure how autoencoder architectures based on unsupervised neural networks can be employed to reliably expose transition pathways and to provide a suitable low-dimensional representation.

Precursor-mediated crystallization process in suspensions of hard spheres.

A large scale computer simulation study of crystal nucleation in hard spheres shows that a purely repulsive system (that has no metastable fluid-fluid coexistence) crystallizes via the same mechanism.

Crystallization mechanism of hard sphere glasses.

This work presents extensive computer simulations addressing the crystallization of monodisperse hard-sphere glasses at constant volume (as in a colloid experiment), finding multiple crystalline patches appear without particles having to diffuse more than one diameter.

On polydispersity and the hard sphere glass transition.

This work uses extensive numerical simulations based on an experimentally-realistic particle size distribution (PSD) and compares to commonly-used PSDs to find that the mode of kinetic arrest depends on the PSD's shape and not only on its variance.

Hard spheres: crystallization and glass formation

It is found that increasing the polydispersity at a given concentration slows down crystal nucleation, and reduces the supersaturation since it tends to stabilize the fluid but to destabilize the crystal.

Crystallization in a sheared colloidal suspension.

Numerically the crystallization process in a supersaturated suspension of repulsive colloidal particles driven by simple shear flow is studied, demonstrating that the suppression of nucleation is due to the inhibition of a pre-structured liquid.

Equilibrium phase behavior of polydisperse hard spheres.

At sufficiently large polydispersity, fractionation into several solid phases can occur, consistent with previous approximate calculations; it is found that coexistence of several solids with a fluid phase is also possible.

Avalanches mediate crystallization in a hard-sphere glass

Using molecular-dynamics simulations, this work studies the crystallization of the simplest glass-forming system, a hard-sphere glass, and finds that crystallization is caused by a subset of particles cooperatively undergoing large rearrangements in an intermittent stochastic fashion (avalanches).

Structure and kinetics in the freezing of nearly hard spheres

We consider homogeneous crystallisation rates in confocal microscopy experiments on colloidal nearly hard spheres at the single particle level. These we compare with Brownian dynamics simulations by

Phase behavior of polydisperse spheres: simulation strategies and an application to the freezing transition.

Specialized Monte Carlo simulation techniques and moment free energy method calculations are described and deployed to study the fluid-solid transition of an assembly of repulsive spherical particles described by a top-hat "parent" distribution of particle sizes.

Brownian dynamics of polydisperse colloidal hard spheres: Equilibrium structures and random close packings

Recently we presented a new technique for numerical simulations of colloidal hard-sphere systems and showed its high efficiency. Here, we extend our calculations to the treatment of both 2- and
